HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here is a preview of the coming Spring Summer Collection 2012: Reflecting Roots...

Reflecting Roots by Ida Johansson is reflections of the flowers on the surface and a reminder about the roots - under the earth, just as big and maybe even more important than the flower. Digging further, it is also a symbol of the Swedish roots of the designer, present in the yellow and blue colour combination.

New collection Connecting Codes

Dear friends and fashionistas... the complete runway of the collection Connecting Codes is finally online! Check it out at www.idajohansson.com/collections/cc or see the interview on you tube here.

A TEXT BY ZARA PATTERSON
In Connecting Codes, Ida wants to demonstrate the versatility of her fabrics, worn in layers over winter or shed off in the summer. Silk and lace, mixed with cashmere and natural knits reflect her Swedish roots, since “the thing that people most like about the clothing is the material mix. Raw fibres like linen and silk bring a sense of nobility to the collection”.

Thus, Ida's imagination changes paths from season to season, brazenly at times as she uses colours that “come directly from landscapes, like sunsets against forests and back to the heavens, to insinuate nature and its gentle fluidity.”

The Ida Johansson label continues to be inspired by a sense of universal duality. Her first collection in 2009, Magnetic Myth, celebrated the union of men and women, quite literally, in a series of clothing to be worn by both sexes and at the same time.

Then, in 2010, Intergalactic Intestines, a fantasy line, was born after a voyage to New Delhi, where she came across fabrics that “you wouldn't find anywhere else in the world”. This collection is another expression of dual forms, which Johansson says comes partly inspired by the philosophy of Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson. His images from inside the human body draw parallels with that of outer space, deepening the concept that man and universe are inextricably linked.

Ida explains her other motivations for continuing the theme into 2011's Connecting Codes: “Well, when I did the Intergalactic Intestines collection I was working with the singer Nina Kinert for her tour outfit for the album Read Leader Dream. She wanted me to watch the Star Wars movies as her music takes from its themes. In the end I had so many new visions that I had to keep on working with the idea, I fell in love with the fantasy. So Connecting Codes is an expansion of epic legends; 70's heroines turned futuristic and ethereal.”

Black Berlin

A TEXT BY ZARA PATTERSON
Swedish fashion designer Ida Johansson, based in Barcelona, flew to Berlin's Edged Showroom this July 5th to début her label in the German fashion market. Rubbing shoulders with other alternative fashion brands, photographers and the Berlin scenesters, Ida Johansson, adds to her repertoire of events so far in 2011.

It's been a busy 2011 season for Ida Johannson, the Barcelona fashionista currently pushing fashion boundaries in the heat of the Catalan capital.

After starting off the season on the catwalks of the Pasarela de Moda Abierta in Murcia, Ida Johansson followed up by starring in El Circuito de Moda in Valencia. Heading quickly to Barcelona for the 10th Edition of Changing Room, a pop-up showroom in her own Barcelona neighbourhood, Ida then arrived at the Edged Showroom just in time to flaunt the next collection to admiring eyes, against a stunning backdrop of the Glashaus Arena.

The huge industrial glass windows of the Glashaus ombined with the innovative platform that is the Edged collective, creating an ideal ambience for Ida Johansson's first foray into the Berlin fashion scene. “So much is going on in parallels during Berlin Fashion Week” mused Ida. “There's Bread&Butter, the Mercedes Benz shows and the more underground scene at Edged Showroom. It was interesting for international designers, plucked from various emerging sectors in Europe and beyond; places like Vienna, Warsaw and Korea all got a look in. There was another Swedish designer but I think I represent both the Swedish and Spanish markets.”

Ida Johansson's collection at Edged Showroom is Connecting Codes for S/S 2012, which follows through on her theme from the A/W 2011 collection, a mix of sheer and silk, accessorised with playful chains and copper bow ties.

Returning from Pasarela Abierta

Driving trough the coastline of Spain, from Murcia back to Barcelona, loaded with positive energy and experience after the successful fashion show at Pasarela de Moda Abierta Murcia. In the backseat is the gigantic neon “Ida Johansson” we received as a gift from the organisation.

The Murcia fashion weekend is the initiative of “Fundacion Murcia 21” and celebrated its 10th anniversary. It all took place in an amazing circle theatre, a historical scenery which actually inaugurated their resent renovated locals with the shows.

Pasarela Abierta unifies vanguard fashion and emergent designers. Starting with “Almacen de ideas” a runway by five fashion students, all of them with great creative ideas. Followed by: El sonido de…’s cheery colourful jersey, Ida Johansson’s fantasy asymmetrical drapes,  Bibian Blue’s geometrical dark futurist, Eugenio Loarce’s – ultra feminine baroque and Fashion Victim St – romantic moments for travelling.

Here is almost one hour of Pasarela de Moda Abierta Murcia.

Interplay ∴ Made in Paradise

In the beginning: a square was the only garment: one single piece.

One weft - no cut. As the fibres was draped over the body, warming, and letting it breath at the same time, creating natural colors and shadows.

People, modern society and fashion designers, have developed the garments, but one piece is still the same: the shawl. It begins in paradise...

-Yes, they are Made in Paradise.

This is a search where future meets tradition in multicolour bias cut shawls ant painted shawls in aquarelle techniques.

Check out the online store for detailed pictures.

Downtown

Three answers from Downtown: the company behind the logotype Ida Johansson by Filip Sigholm.

ONE
The images from the collection Magnetic Myth truly inspired me. The calm but yet dramatic sense they transmit. In its calm the garments still express motion, This, I wanted to implement in the logotype. I started working in a calm and stylish typography, softening the shapes and then sharpened selected angles, to give the word-picture further character, just as the image.

TWO
At the moment I run Downtown on my own. The idea is that one beautiful day I will expand the business. Thou I take it with peace, since I do this as a sidekick from my employee, I think it’s fun.
The name Downtown comes from when I moved from Mölnlycke in to town. I moved downtown… that easy.

THREE
Göteborg (Gothenburg) is not only a city; it is a way of living! It is the ''dé e la gôtt änna-mentaliteten'' (“it’s la nice to live now la–mentality”) and how you see your self as a Gothemburger, I love and inspires by. It’s basically me.
=)

Made in Paradise

The upcoming shawls are made in paradise… I cannot find a more true word to describe it.

Picturing animals in aquarelle techniques. Every shawl was painted directly on the finest surface (50% silk, 50% cashmere). It is like a work of art, made in a place of harmony.

Oh, and please forgive me Salvador Dahlí for using a cliché like "paradise", but in this case i see of the word as a fact.

Intergalactic Intestines

Intergalactic Intestines • Intestinos Intergalacticos • Intergalaktiska Inälvor

Photo Ida Johansson, close-up hand printed fabric

It’s quite curious that the biggest thing we can prove, outer space, the universe is so similar to our body’s inner space, the intestines and hormones and other particle things. I can loose myself watching Lennart Nilsson’s photographs from inside the body, imagining my inside and myself looking out from inside a spaceship.

A key element of the epic Star Wars saga is the force, a metaphysic power as "an energy field created by all living things that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together”. Just like the pictures from inside the body!

Intergalactic Intestines is a collection with garments like a mirage, moving like quicksilver. The breath is like a future Star Wars episode with its roots in the seventy’s. The sound is Red Leader Dream by Nina Kinert.

The new collection for those of how seeks limited edition garments.

One firm ground

Collage by John Baldessari "Above, On, Under"

Returning to Stockholm was nice, returning to Barcelona was also nice. Since May 2010 I live and work in both countries. During quite some time I was searching for one place to be, but realised that it is not necessary in our global world. The Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva wrote “there is only one sun, but it travels the world every day”, today I would contest her with a twisted smile “there is only one Internet, but it travels the world within a blink of an eye”. Wonder if she would be as impressed as I am.

My firm ground is from now on the World Wide Web. I love the fact that it is close to everyone, independent from where.

Red Leader Dream

I was invited to explore outer space, further dimensions in music, style and garments, creating the outfits for the tour. Red Leader Dream The album by Nina Kinert is an audio script for a seventh Star Wars saga that takes place on the desert planet Tatooine after “The Return of the Jedi”. A true rhythm-driven science fiction epic about love, hope and adventure viewed through a fantasy filter.

Release party at Kåken Stockholm, I’ll be there!

I believe this could be one of those summer trends… The It - bell pin for all ladies. Preferably worn over her most holy part of the body.

It is great fun to wear as well. For every step you take it makes you aware of your fanny. I designed it for my sister’s hen party, but it would be a twinkle to wear it at other special occasions.

Logo + Web

The path to the final logotype was long, until I got in contact with Filip Sigholm – a meticulous and efficient graphic designer. He impressed by understanding the brand and expressing it with its twelve letters. Of course he got the confidence to do the web as well!

Filip told me that during the process he was listening to one album continuously: Olafur Arnalds.

What’s in a name?

The Swedish meaning of the name Ida is “idog” which means someone who persist towards the goal. The Spanish signification of ida is one way ticket or crazy. Maybe a combination of the three makes a fair whole of i, d and a.

Harper’s Bazaar Mexico - October issue

Yes!

Plus my design is next to my personal favourite Spanish fashion designer: David Delfin.

Harper's BazaarThursday, October 15, 2009

And then…

The seed had been planted, I was not aware of its power. Shortly after the fashion show I took a position as a textile designer for an interior company, designing prints, colouring squares and stripes. My first drawing was a flower and my last pictured forks, knives and cups. It was ironic. I hungered for creativity and self-expression.

Someone said you have to destroy to build new, and so I did. I left what I had created during the four years of residency in Barcelona, I moved back to my hometown Stockholm, to grow the seed and continue building the brand.

Magnetic Myth ∴ act II

Magnetic Myth • Mito Magnetico • Magnetisk Myt

Video El ego

My magnetic myth brought me on an unexpected voyage. It became the second piece of the beginning, as if it planted a seed of thought. I completed it with a runway show at Madrid fashion week, Ego de Cibeles.

The collection Magnetic Myth consists of the physic phenomenon of the magnetism, the symbol of Yin Yang and the myth of Plato. The collection is for men, women and the union between them. The most conceptual garments have the possibility to be worn in three different ways: as man, with the emptiness of the woman, as a woman with the emptiness of the man and as booth at the same time, creating a space of union.

Journal

It’s

Since I got my first diary with a pink horse and a shiny locker I have been writing something almost every day. For me it is about putting an instant in to words, in an instant. It can be as spontaneous as deep, the charm is that no one judges you.

It’s just there.

When I started studying fashion the journal was replaced with a sketchbook. Feather light thoughts became ideas for garments and collections. Now, fashion is making me return to my journal. I will write the story of the brand Ida Johansson and my intention is to do so with a light mind.

It’s moments, ideas and inspiration.

I believe winning Moda Fad was the starting point for both of us. Lucrecia Lovera is now running her own brand in Berlin and she is developing a textile investigation under the name ReTape. With her innovative energy and eagerness to experiment Lucrecia makes cool accessories of special fabric.

Magnetic Myth

Magnetic Myth • Mito Magnetico • Magnetisk Myt

Portray and composition Carles Roig, collection photos Ida Johansson

Two forces opposite and complementary. Two poles of positive and negative, light and dark, masculine and feminine, with the same desire to merge as a magnet.

Plato claims that the humans in its original form where androgynous united beings, with the organs duplicated, masculine and feminine at the same time. This model of human was so powerful it became a threat to the gods. Consequently they divided the creatures in two humans, men and women, eternally doomed to seek its other half.

I received a special award at Instituto Europeo di Design as one of the best designers at IED-Barcelona.
